What You Need To Know About Organic Food

What is organic food?

How the food you eat is grown and raised will have a great impact on your health and the environment. So what is the difference between conventionally grown foods and organicfoods?

The term organic refers to the method our agricultural products have been grown and processed. There are specific requirements that have to be met and kept for a product to be considered organic.

For example, organic crops have to be grown in a safe, non-modified soil and must be kept separate from conventional products. Farmers are not allowed to use bioengineered genes(GMOs), synthetic pesticides, sewage sludge-based fertilizers or petroleum-based fertilizers.Organic livestock must be given organic feed and have access to the outdoors. Farmers arenot allowed to give them growth hormones or antibiotics.

The benefits of organic food

Organic food has many benefits. It has more nutrients than their conventionally grown counterparts and people suffering from allergies to chemicals, certain foods or preservatives notice that the symptoms improve or go away when they eat organic food.Organic food has fewer or no pesticides (insecticides, herbicides or fungicides), chemicals that are used in conventional agriculture. Organic food usually comes from smaller farms nearthe stores where it is sold because, being always fresh and not containing preservatives, it isalso very perishable.

Organic farming practices conserve water, reduce pollution, increase soil fertility, reduce soilerosion and use less energy. Animals that are organically raised are not given growth hormones, antibiotics or fed animal by products. Antibiotics are used in conventional meat production to help create antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.Recent studies have shown that levels of certain nutrients and fatty acids were up to 50%higher in organic milk and meat than in their conventionally raised versions. This is because the organic milk and meat come from cattle that graze on natural grass and are given more space to move around keeping them healthy.

Organic food is not genetically modified. Genetically engineered (GE) or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) foods are animals and plants which had their DNA altered in such ways tha tcannot occur in traditional crossbreeding or nature, to make them resistant to pesticides. These things FRIGHTEN me and they should you too.

Eat organic when you can and be sure to pay close attention to labels. It’s really scary what is being put into our food and being alert to how our food is grown is just as important as the amount of calories, carbs and fat these days.
