Be Your Own Superhero

Something really liberating happens when you realize, I mean TRULY realize, that you and only you control your own happiness. I spent so many years often thinking how much “happier” I would be when I got leaner, my love life was perfect, when I wasn’t so busy, then when I wanted more work..The list could go on and on and I am sure you get the point.

Then, something magical happened. I started learning the power of BEING PRESENT. It is something you have to work at. As kids, being present is so easy and natural. Then, as we get older, we can’t stop rehashing our mistakes, fretting over the future, “what if” this, “what if” that. We get so caught up in our head that the mind chatter we have with ourselves has us concocting all sorts of stories to stress us out and be anything BUT present.

Plain and simple: If you are thinking of the past or future you are not present. It takes real effort to look around and pay attention to what is going on around you RIGHT NOW. Relationships suffer, work suffers, your life and happiness suffer when you are not present for the only moment we are ever truly promised. We never know what the next moment brings, which is why it is so important to live in the moment we are given NOW. It is much harder than ever to be fully present these days with all the texting, social media updates and general fast pace of life...even when we don’t have anywhere to go we are hurrying!

Learning to be more present sounds so simple, yet is truly life changing. Even making small changes to live more in the now can be life altering. We really can be our own Super Hero, we just have to look within.

Two of my favorite books are The Power of Now and A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. I highly recommend both. I even have the C.D. in the car for days when I need reminders. :)
