Everyone wants to be happy, but everyday problems, stress, our worries about the future, can sometimes make it quite impossible.
Can we choose to be happy? Can we control our minds and make it happen? Well, psychologists who study happiness, believe that we can pursue happiness, and we can even foster positive emotions such as serenity, empathy, and gratitude.
Here are seven strategies that can help you be happy:
1. Choose to be happy
First of all, you have to want to be happy. If you just stay there and wait for happiness to hit you, it's just a waste of time. Make a conscious choice to be happy, make it an achievement, a goal, change your attitude towards life, don't victimize yourself and don't see only the bad things in life.
Choose to be around people and in an environment that increases your probability to be happy. Learn good career-related skills, interpersonal skills, and self-management skills.
2. Gratitude and forgiveness
Think of all the things that make you feel grateful. This will make you shift away from despair and bitterness and promotes happiness. Nursing grievances and holding a grudge can seriously affect your health, both mental and physical. What you have to do is to foster forgiveness and eliminate the feelings that create resentment and bitterness.
3. Block negative feelings and thoughts
Yoga, meditation, relaxation techniques and rhythmic breathing can help you promote serenity and quell anxiety. It will help you recognize and change thoughts you have about being helpless, angry or useless. If you identify the negative thoughts and feelings, you will be able to change them.
4. Don't stress about money
Money is one of the main problems for many people. Not having enough makes us insecure, sad, and doubtful about the future. Money draws a curtain in front of our eyes, not letting us see the beauty of life anymore. We will probably always feel we don't have enough money no matter how much we have. The more you earn, the more you will spend. Learn to enjoy things that don’t cost, such as friendship and love.
Positive thinking influences life satisfaction and self-esteem and it also makes your work and personal relationships better. Optimism means interpreting everything that happens to you, thinking about yourself in flexible terms ('I will study, and I am going to do my best to pass that test') and not fixed terms as it happens to pessimists ('I will fail the test').
Friends and family are the secret to being happy and forgetting about all the things that bring you down. Friendship offers you the support you need to cope with real life, to disconnect from stress and worries. Studies showed that friendship also helps you live longer.
7. Hobbies and meaningful activities
There is a state called the 'flow' when your mind is thoroughly absorbed in a meaningful task that will challenge your abilities. Have you ever noticed that doing what you like (jogging, playing sports, playing the guitar, playing chess, etc.) puts you in a good mood? How about doing more of that?GO BACK
